OKX derivatives and risk: what to understand before opening a leveraged position
Derivatives are tempting because small amounts can control large positions. They are risky for exactly the same reason. A leveraged position on OKX can be closed automatically if the market moves far enough against you, and the loss of the margin you committed can come quickly. This article describes the main concepts without hype: leverage, margin, liquidation, funding and sizing. It does not recommend using derivatives, does not forecast prices and states no rates. If you choose to learn, do it slowly, with small amounts and with money you can afford to lose entirely.
What leverage really does
Leverage lets a modest deposit support a larger exposure. Gains are magnified, but so are losses, and the thinner your safety margin, the sooner a small move against you ends the position. It is easy to select a high setting because the interface offers it. Treat the maximum as a limit, not as a suggestion, and prefer low settings while you learn.
Margin and liquidation
Margin is the collateral supporting the position. If the loss grows too large relative to it, the platform closes the position automatically, which is called liquidation, and the margin is lost. The order screen shows an estimated liquidation price. Read it before confirming, and consider whether the market could plausibly reach that level, remembering that fast moves can skip across prices.
Funding and other costs
Perpetual contracts involve periodic funding payments between long and short holders, in addition to trading fees. Both depend on market conditions and account level and change over time. Read the official documentation and review your account history to see what you have actually paid. Holding a position for days can cost much more than closing it quickly.
Sizing and discipline
Decide in advance the loss you can accept and size the position so that reaching it does not hurt your finances. Write the plan down before you enter and avoid adding to a losing position in the hope of recovery. Many people are better served by staying with spot trading or by not trading at all, and that is a perfectly sound choice.
