A password manager setup for your OKX account and the email behind it

Guides · 2026-10-09

Large data breaches at unrelated websites happen regularly, and the leaked email and password pairs are tried automatically against many other services, including exchanges. If your OKX password, or the password of the email account behind it, has ever been used elsewhere, it may already be on such a list. Two-step verification helps a great deal, but a unique password is still the first barrier. This guide shows how to move your exchange account and its linked email to unique, strong passwords stored in a password manager, in an order that keeps you signed in and in control throughout.

Choose and secure the password manager

Pick a reputable password manager that works on the devices you use. Protect it with a long master passphrase you have never used anywhere else, and enable its own two-step verification. Write the master passphrase and the manager's recovery details on paper and store them safely at home. The password manager becomes the key to everything else, so it deserves the most care of all your accounts.

Change the email password first

Start with the email account linked to OKX, because it receives reset links and security confirmations. Generate a long random password in the manager, change it in the email settings and confirm you can sign in again. Check the email's list of connected devices and remove old ones. Make sure the email has two-step verification of its own, ideally with an authenticator or security key.

Then change the OKX password

Sign in to OKX from a trusted device and change the account password to a new random one generated by the manager. Expect that changing the password may trigger a temporary security hold on some actions such as withdrawals, so do this when you do not need to move funds. Afterwards, end other active sessions and sign in once more using the manager to confirm everything works.

Clean up old copies

Delete passwords saved in browser memory, notes apps, screenshots or messages. Turn off the browser's own password saving if you now rely on the manager. Check that the manager auto-fills only on the genuine OKX domain, which also helps protect you from lookalike pages. Review the setup once a year and change passwords immediately if a service you use reports a breach.
