Finding your own leaf in an OKX reserve snapshot, and what a Swiss saver should read next

Guides · 2026-10-16

Swiss savers tend to ask a banker's question about any custodian: show me that my money is there. A crypto exchange cannot answer that the way a bank statement does, but OKX's proof-of-reserves reports come close for one specific point. Each snapshot gathers user balances into a Merkle tree, publishes the root, and compares the total with assets held in exchange-controlled wallets. You can check that your own balance was one of the leaves. That is a narrow but genuine piece of evidence, and knowing its limits is as important as running the check.

Locating the audit page and your record

In the OKX app or on the website, search for proof of reserves; the page is usually linked from the footer of the website and from the security or transparency section of the app. Open the self-audit or verification view for your account. It shows the snapshot date and an identifier for your record, sometimes with your balances per coin at that moment. Note the date first: everything on the page refers to that point in time, not to your balance today.

What the check confirms

When the page shows that your record is included in the tree, it means your balances at the snapshot time were part of the liabilities total that OKX compared with its reserves. If you want to go further, the page refers to an open-source verification tool that recalculates the path from your leaf to the published root. That step is optional, but it removes the need to trust the page's own display. Compare the balances shown with your own records from that day.

Reading the reserve ratio per coin

The report lists a reserve ratio for each covered asset, meaning reserves held divided by user balances in that coin. Look at the coins you actually hold rather than the headline figure. Read the methodology section to see which wallets were counted, how the snapshot was taken and whether a third party reviewed it. If a coin you hold is not covered, the report says nothing about it.

Where the report stops

A snapshot does not show liabilities other than user balances, events between snapshots, or how assets are managed day to day. It is one input among several. For a Swiss saver with a meaningful amount, the more decisive controls are personal: enable an allowlist for withdrawal addresses, keep only what you trade on the exchange, and hold long-term savings in a wallet whose recovery phrase you control. Record each snapshot's date, ratios for your coins and your inclusion result, so you can follow the trend over time.
