Checking spreads when converting between Swiss francs and crypto on OKX

Guides · 2026-10-09

When you move between Swiss francs, stablecoins and crypto, there are often two ways to do it on an exchange: a simple convert screen that shows a quote, or the spot market with its order book. Both are convenient, but the price you effectively receive can differ depending on the route, the time of day and the size of your order. The difference is not always shown as a fee; it is often built into the spread or the quote. This guide explains how to compare these routes on OKX using your own small tests, so you can choose consciously rather than by habit. It does not quote any figures, which change constantly.

Understand the two routes

A convert or quick-buy screen gives you a quoted price valid for a short time, which you accept or decline. The spot market lets you place market or limit orders against the order book, where you see the best bid and ask directly. The quote route is simple and predictable; the order book route gives more control but requires attention to spread and depth. The help centre explains how each feature works on your account.

Compare the quote with the order book

Before converting, open the order book for the corresponding pair in another view. Note the best bid and ask and calculate the midpoint. Then request a quote for the same amount on the convert screen. Comparing the quoted price with the midpoint gives you a rough idea of the spread included. Repeat at a different time of day, since spreads can widen during quiet hours or volatile moments.

Check the final effective price

After any conversion or trade, look at the final amount received and divide it by the amount spent to get the effective rate. For spot trades, include the trading fee from the fill details and the official fee schedule. For conversions, check whether any fee is shown separately. Record the effective rate, the route and the time in a small table so comparisons are based on facts.

Choose the route that fits each situation

For small, occasional conversions, simplicity may matter more than a small price difference. For larger or regular conversions, limit orders on a liquid pair often give you more control over the price. Avoid converting during sudden market moves when spreads widen. Review your table every few months to see which route has worked better for your usual sizes and times.
